I knew Dave from surfing, probably from the early 2000s when I started surfing there. Dave was a regular fixture in the dawn patrol line up. A couple of favorite memories: I paddled out during one of those winter north swells (probably more than 13 years ago) and it was quite big. I was quite nervous and Dave said, “Don’t worry, I got ya covered. You’ve got friends here.” He buoyed my confidence that morning and had that way with people.
Another memory - 2015, another big El Niño swell. I got out of the water and Dave was up there with his camera. “Ida!” He exclaimed. “I think I got a couple of really great shots of you. What’s your email? I’m gonna send them to you.” Such a sweet guy.
In a sport that can be quite aggressive, competitive and territorial, he was always kind and welcoming. It was good to meet some of his family, and see all the regulars come together to pay our respects. He will be missed!

I'll never forget Dave. He always had a kind word for everyone and turned every experience into a positive. He could step into a room and everyone instantly felt happier. He was truly gifted that way. I hope some of his positive energy rubbed off on me. He was a good friend.

Beckie and I knew Dave the last 5 years, centered around dog activities (his Wilson, our Romeo), occasional dinners, a couple of hikes, and a trip to Mammoth Mountain. Through this we learned of Dave’s love of his family, surfing, and playing drums with his garage band. Dave was ever the gentleman. His love and curiosity of life was second to none.

Abby and I are childhood friends and I spent a good piece of my childhood over at Dave and Abby’s. I remember vividly his infectious laugh and good energy. Taking turns getting swung around in circles in the front yard or heading out in the van to the pool, Dave drumming on the steering wheel to the music as we drove, it always felt like an adventure. Lucky to have known Dave and Abby.

Dave was truly one of the most special men I have ever known. I will miss his smile and remember his laugh. Some people have a uniquely positive effect on other peoples lives without knowing it. Dave shared this goodness with others. Dave was giver and not a taker. Dave displayed a positive attitude even when he may not have felt like it. This is a very rare quality. His smile was contagious. He was truly a role model and I don't say that about many people. Thank you Dave for your genuine, kind spirit and the wonderful memories that I will always carry. I love you and will always miss you buddy.

I didn't know Dave very long maybe 3-4 years, as a fellow musician, as I am a visiting member of the Garage Band.As senior members, we had band remembrances that can't be printed here! Dave and I had many conversations discussing our similar intrests and old guy issues. As a Drummer, he was always happy to play whatever was put out there, and I never once heard him bitch, or say a cross word to anyone about anything... He was curious and un assuming. Gone way to soon.. he will be missed by all that knew him. Bart Wittrock.

I knew Dave from Swami's dawn patrol. Loved surfing with Dave. Not to mention hanging out in the parking lot and having some laughs.
Dave was on the Namotu trip that a bunch of us took in 2003. The surf wasn't great, but it was a good time nonetheless.

Dave was a special guy and I will never forget his kindness. He showed this to me 30 years or so ago, before we became neighbors on Acacia, and when I was just starting to surf at Swami’s. As we all know, the dawn patrol crowd at the Secret Spot is a pretty tight knit group, Dave sensed that I was trying to fit in and not step on any toes, but that can be difficult when everyone in the line up wants to get their fair share of waves. I had a couple of incidents involving minor collisions which were adjudicated by the official parking lot committee in my favor. Dave was a charter member of the committee.
I remember one morning on a good surf day Dave could see I was frustrated and told me to go in front of him on a wave. I couldn’t believe he was serious, but sure enough we both dropped in and took turns riding in front then behind on the same wave. What a blast to share a wave with a friend. I couldn’t believe anyone would trust me not cause them bodily injury, but he was stoked to share the wave, and I could see and feel his joy as he cut back in front of me. I never did that with anyone else at Swami’s except Dave.
Dave thought of the dawn patrol crowd as his second family. I feel blessed for that, for the days out at the Secret Spot with him and the crew, and to have shared what I know he considered precious gifts from God with someone as kind and happy as Dave.

I sent Dave a note to let him know Robert Swinington had passed away. I then told him I was his 2nd cousin on my great grandfather Josephs side. Our grandfaters were brothers, Daves was Thomas & mine was Norman. we both had so much fun talking & exploring our backgrounds. Just wish we had more time. Can't believe Dave was as cooky as me.

I met Dave around 1980 when my daughter Ingrid and his daughter Abby were friends. We lived close by on Sierra Avenue in Solana Beach. The girls were around 3 years old and went to the same pre-school. Dave was a very caring and engaged father and a supportive friend and had many noble aspirations and traits as well as talents. As we moved to other parts of the county and the girls attended different schools, we lost our close connection with each other. But it was always a joy over the years to get a Christmas letter from Dave and Abby and family. My condolences to all who loved him and miss him. His kindness and good deeds live on in our hearts.

Dave was my mentor the 1st year I started working at TRACE ~ 15 years ago. He was the 1st to teach me how to lead Work Readiness Trainings at Camp Barrett (a Juvenile Detention Facility in Alpine). He showed me how to be a better teacher in numerous ways. Dave will always be a very kind and inspirational soul to me. I'm eternally grateful to Dave and his family for the opportunity to learn from him.

I have not known Dave but for the last nine years of his life . I have heard the stories of his adventures, and marveled at his experiences and travels . We shared his only daughter , my daughter-in-law Abby , and our wonderful Grandaughter , Isabel . We also shared smiles and tears , laughter and sadness , but it was with a sense of camaraderie that can best be found when one is older and tested . I am so happy to have been a small part of his and Judie’s lives . To have visited recently ,and enjoyed a newfound bond that death cannot take away. I will miss him but will have a part of him always through Abby and Isabel . I wish I could be there to watch those waves and those surfers next week , and remind me of Dave’s free spirit . RIP and Love

I remember Dave was instrumental in our son (Chris) getting his driver's license. I remember Dave and Judy would always invite Chris to their house for a meal with them.

I met David when Abby was about 3 years old. I have been friends with Judy his first wife for over 40 years. I remember how sweet and loving he was and a great dad to Abby. She always loved spending time with her dad. I remember how much he liked to surf and enjoy life. During his later years I had the opportunity to visit him with his present wife Judie his daughter Abby along with granddaughter Isabelle. It was a sweet time seeing him with his granddaughter. He will be missed by so many but will remain in our hearts forever. May you rest in peace David
